I would like to inquire if anyone knows of programs which are doctoral
level, the DMA, but in pedagogy, rather than performance. I do
understand the usual distinction between the PhD (research degree)
versus the DMA (performance degree), but it appears that there is,
indeed, at some schools, a middle ground, subject to review by
committee that determine entrance.
Such degrees are plentiful when it comes to piano; I don't know how
many times I've noticed a DMA in piano pedagogy, or even the PhD in
piano pedagogy, but in strings, I had not been able to discover
anything like this until recently, when a violist mentioned his program
at University of Alberta. This person [see their page, "Viola
Pickles," which is a doctoral research project on the issues of
violinists switching to viola: http://www.violapickles.blogspot.com/
]
I looked at the music department page of that university, and they do
indeed have the DMA in string pedagogy.
Any others you know of? I don't really want to go there, where it's so
cold...
Thanks in advance! This is really a troubling question for me
personally, as I don't really have the physical ability to stand and
play major concerti by the hour, but I'm a good player who is deeply
interested in violin pedagogy.
